Advantages and Disadvantages of Hydrogen Energy

Hydrogen energy, as a promising clean energy source, has garnered increasing attention in recent years. Its advantages and disadvantages are distinctive, shaping its potential role in the future energy market.

Advantages of Hydrogen Energy

1. Environmentally Friendly: The only byproduct of hydrogen fuel reaction is water, with almost no harmful emissions, making it an important choice for reducing carbon emissions.

2. High Energy Density: Hydrogen has a higher energy density than traditional batteries. Vehicles powered by hydrogen fuel cells can be refueled in just 5 to 10 minutes and travel over 600 kilometers, significantly enhancing their range.

3. Diverse Production Methods: Hydrogen can be produced through various methods such as water electrolysis and natural gas reforming, offering flexibility and versatility.

4. Storage and Transportation Potential: Liquid hydrogen and high-pressure hydrogen storage technologies have already begun commercialization and show great application potential. Liquid hydrogen is suitable for long-distance transportation, while high-pressure hydrogen storage (gaseous hydrogen) is the current mainstream storage method.

Hydrogen energy has a vast potential for application, but there are still some challenges to overcome in the promotion process:

1. Cost Considerations: Currently, the production and storage costs of hydrogen are relatively high. However, with technological advancements and the realization of economies of scale, costs are expected to gradually decrease in the future.

For example, green hydrogen production technologies are rapidly developing and are expected to become more cost-effective with policy support.

2. Transportation and Storage Technologies: Although transporting and storing hydrogen requires specialized equipment, the infrastructure, such as hydrogen refueling stations and storage facilities, is gradually improving with government support for hydrogen energy development. This helps address these challenges.

Many countries, including Japan and South Korea, are actively promoting the construction of hydrogen refueling stations to support the widespread adoption of hydrogen-powered vehicles.

3. Safety Concerns: With technological advancements and improved safety standards, the safety of hydrogen refueling stations and related equipment is continuously improving to ensure user safety.

4. Insufficient Infrastructure: Currently, hydrogen refueling stations and other infrastructure in Taiwan are still under development. With government policy support and corporate investment, the construction process is expected to accelerate in the future, making hydrogen energy more widespread.

Taiwan’s Hydrogen Energy Development and Related Regulations

With the global focus on energy transition and carbon reduction, hydrogen energy, as a clean energy source, is gradually becoming an important component of energy policies worldwide. Taiwan is no exception.

In March 2022, the National Development Council officially released the “Taiwan 2050 Net Zero Emissions Pathway and Strategy Overview,” listing hydrogen energy as one of the “twelve key strategies.” The government is actively promoting the development of related regulations and infrastructure to support this initiative.

Taiwan’s Current Status of Hydrogen Energy Development

According to the Ministry of Economic Affairs’ plan, Taiwan will focus on the hydrogen supply chain and applications in the short term, including industrial decarbonization, hydrogen production through natural gas reforming (SMR) and carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS), hydrogen power generation, and hydrogen-powered vehicle transportation.

By 2050, Taiwan’s hydrogen demand is expected to reach 4.06 million tons, with 40% coming from domestic production and 60% relying on imports (liquid hydrogen receiving stations).

Hydrogen Refueling Station Infrastructure

Hydrogen refueling stations are a key infrastructure for hydrogen energy applications. These stations not only support the transportation needs of various vehicles (such as hydrogen-powered cars, buses, etc.), but also play an important role in future business models.

The short-term policy goal is to improve the domestic hydrogen liquefaction and storage transportation systems to facilitate the construction and operation of hydrogen refueling stations.

Hydrogen Energy-Related Regulations and Policies in Taiwan

To promote the development of hydrogen energy, the government has formulated a series of relevant regulations and policies. After the establishment of the “Hydrogen Energy Promotion Task Force” by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, various government agencies have collaborated to comprehensively plan for hydrogen supply, application technologies, and infrastructure.

Additionally, the government is actively referring to international experiences and studying successful cases from other countries in the hydrogen energy industry development to more effectively drive the growth of Taiwan’s hydrogen energy industry chain.
